Temperament

red-haired four-year-old playing electric guitar

Each of us is born with the special blend of behavioral characteristics and personality traits that form our individual temperaments. Temperament is not something we can change very much as our lives evolve, but we can teach ourselves and our children to alter the way we utilize and express it.

Temperament affects how your child learns, plays, makes friends and shows love. It doesn’t predict exactly how your child will turn out, but it can predict the ways your child will most likely react, feel, behave and learn as they experience different types of events in their lives.

Learning about your child’s temperament will help you help your child adapt to particular social situations throughout his or her life. How well your child learns to adjust his or her temperament to relate to changes in the world around him or her can affect how much he or she learns, how well he or she behaves, and ultimately, how happy a life he or she can have.
